2/3/2007 ~ Bangkok: Floating Market
On the Rio: Bob Marley & the Wailers ~ Burnin' and Lootin'
After the coconut plantation I went to Bangkok Floating Market : Damnoen Saduak.
To get to the market, I got to take an exhilarating and fascinating local boat ride along the canal. The traditional long-tailed boat, powered by a huge diesel engine allows an interesting glimpse into local life.
Along the way I got to see traditional teak floating houses and catch a glimpse of tranquil local life along the river.
The scene suddenly changes upon arrival at the market with the shouts of the vendors replacing the roar of the engine.
The King is highly regarded in Thailand, and his picture is everywhere. He will turn 80 this year and has been on the throne for 60 years.
Totally chaotic, small 'klhongs' or canals are filled with small flat boats jockeying for position, expertly paddled by mature ladies ready to stop and bargain at a moment's notice. It's colorful, noisy, totally touristy but great fun.
Transactions are more concerned with tourists rather than locals these days but the boats are still piled high with tropical fruit and vegetables, fresh, ready-to-drink coconut juice and local food cooked from floating kitchens located right on the boat.
Maybe some waffles for breakfast?
Or pick your own ingredients for a luncheon soup?
Followed by some kebab...
And fruit for dessert...
Or just pick something you've never seen before...
If you are not hungry, you can buy other items from the boat women, such as toys or hats.
Of course there is a tourist shopping area not on the canal as well. One specializes in silk.Another in various trinkets.
I really enjoyed my time at the market.
